The Agdal Gardens are located within the grounds of the Royal Palace and are open to visitors twice a week, only when the King of Morocco is not staying at the palace. Its name is derived from the Berber language, and can be translated to meaning “Walled Meadow”. Abd el Moumen, ruler of the Almohad Dynasty, came into power during the twelfth century, and the gardens started taking shape as an orchard. In later years, the Saadi Dynasty renovated the gardens, enclosing its beauty with protective walls. the Agdal Gardens are a wonderful example of the architectural and landscaping skills of the time. With underground irrigation systems in place, the orchards could be watered from the pools and a massive lagoon that were erected on the grounds. Water for the gardens could be sourced from the Atlas Mountains and the Ourika Valley. The largest lagoon is referred to as the Tank of Health, and was a favorite swimming location for the King’s troops.

The Palmeraie of Marrakech has more than 100,000 trees, mainly palm trees, on about 15,000 hectares as well as a production of dates and a vegetable garden. It represents a natural and tourist heritage in Morocco because it is at the same time constituted of an exorbitant nature and an ultramodern urbanism. The history of the latter began in the 12th century when the Almoravid dynasty entered Marrakech. These Berber sovereigns created the palm grove of Marrakech, a few kilometers from the city. At that time, some species of palm trees were venerated, as a symbol of life and fertility. The crops were numerous and the density of trees made it possible to guard against the heat. Nowadays, the palm plantation represents the victory of man over nature. Indeed, the Moroccan population knew over time to supply the desert environment and imposed its existence in areas where nature reigned supreme.

The Toubkal National Park: Incorporating the magnificent Jbel Toubkal Mountain, this national park situated near Marrakech offers adventurers a variety of hiking trails along which to enjoy a wide variety of flora and fauna. Local communities live in the same manner as their ancestors before them, unaffected by progress in the outside world. Toubkal hiking adventures are best during the spring months. During this season, surrounding trees are in full bloom and the weather temperature is perfect for hiking. One of the most unfavorable times to go trekking Morocco is during the summer. Temperatures reach triple digits making a simple hike virtually unbearable. It is possible to hike during the winter season, but often heavy snows close area roads and make winter Trekking Mount Toubkal virtually impossible or deathly dangerous.
